From Last Resort to New Beginnings: Mistletoe's Fecal Transplant Success Story

Name: Mistletoe

Age: 7 months

Breed: Domestic Short Hair

Condition: Chronic diarrhea

"I used the enema on Wednesday. Mistletoe is a 7 month old female DSH who came from a hoarding situation. She has had chronic diarrhea. Her fecal pcr was positive for campylobacter, clostridium with high levels of alpha toxin, cryptosporidium and feline enteric coronavirus. For the past month and a half we have had her, we have tried Tylosin, Fortiflora, Clavamox, GI diet, and Benefiber with no response.

She had her first solid stool on Saturday!!

The fecal transfer was my last ditch effort to make her adoptable and it saved her life!

I will definitely be using this protocol more in the future.“

- Dr. Taylor Smith, DVM, Foothills Animal Shelter

Update: Mistletoe is doing great and was adopted! 🎉

The holidays often lead to acute dietary indiscretions for our patients. Our GI Relief Kits can help stabilize the gut microbiome and relieve clinical symptoms, preventing diarrhea from ruining the festivities. But if chronic cases are giving you and your clients the holiday blues, don’t forget that we are here to help.

Alongside Veterinary Care Specialist, Becky Smith, LVT, she and I can help provide report consultations for those difficult cases. Becky joins the ABV team with over 20 years of veterinary medicine experience in both academic and private practice. With a passion for teaching and knowledge of clinical microbiome application, she’s ready to help you understand your patient’s results and recommendations.

Adapting to change can be challenging, even when it's for the better. Patients with dysbiosis may be particularly sensitive to new supplements, even those aimed at restoring balance. To support their progress, it’s helpful to introduce new supplements gradually. Start with one at a time, allowing at least three days before adding another. This staggered approach gives patients time to adjust to gastrointestinal changes and improves their chances of success.

Research Spotlight

Our R&D team recently published a study investigating the impact of oral FMT capsules on the microbiomes of dogs with chronic gastrointestinal issues.

Microbiome Responses to Oral Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) in a Cohort of Domestic Dogs

Results showed an increase in beneficial bacteria like Faecalibacterium post-FMT and microbiome changes influenced by diet and antibiotic history, highlighting the potential of FMT in modulating canine gut health.
