AnimalBiome maintains the world’s largest stool bank for cats and dogs, and we lead the way in best practices for FMT donor material, including rigorous screening of donor feces, as well as screening of the donors themselves for health, medication history, behavior, and microbiome composition.
Donor Screening
Information on the Material Used in Our Fecal Transplant Capsules
Our Gut Restore Supplements for cats and dogs are derived from stool donated by healthy household pets that meet the following criteria:
- no current or prior health issues
- free of common parasites, pathogens, and infectious diseases
- no antibiotic treatment in the prior six months
- good fecal consistency
- healthy body weight
- good temperament
- diverse, species-rich microbiomes (based on DNA sequencing)
Donor stool samples are submitted for parasite, pathogen, and infectious disease screening through two independent laboratories, Idexx Reference Laboratories and Antech Diagnostics. Both laboratories are leaders in the veterinary diagnostics realm with stringent quality control guidelines and well-validated standard operating procedures. All donor samples are also screened monthly for bacterial composition via DNA sequencing to ensure the overall health and balance of the donor’s gut microbiome.
All cat donor material is screened monthly for parasites and pathogens:
- Cats are screened for the following pathogens via GI PCR Panel: Clostridium perfringens Enterotoxin Gene, Clostridium perfringens Alpha toxin gene, Feline enteric corona virus, Tritrichomonas foetus, Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter jejuni, Feline panleukopenia (parvo) virus, Cryptosporidium spp., Salmonella spp, Toxoplasma gondii, Giardia spp.
- Cats are screened for the following parasite species via Parasite PCR Panel: Ancylostoma spp., Uncinaria stenocephala, Toxacara/Toxascaris spp. (T. canis, T. catis, T. leonina), Baylisascaris procyonis, Trichuris vulpis, Giardia duodenalis (subtypes A/B), Cryptosporidium spp. (C. canis, C. felis), Cystosisopora spp., Eimeria spp., Diplylidium caninum, Echinococcus spp (E. multiocularis, E. granulosus), Taenia spp, Tritrichomonas blagurn/foetus, Toxoplasma gondii, and Neospora caninum.
All dog donor material is screened monthly for parasites and pathogens:
- Dogs are screened for the following pathogens via GI PCR Panel: Clostridium perfringens CPnetEF Toxin gene, Clostridium perfringens Enterotoxin Gene, Clostridium perfringens Alpha toxin gene, Circovirus K9, Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter jejuni, Canine distemper virus, canine enteric coronavirus, Canine parvovirus 2, Clostridium difficile toxins A/B, Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia spp., Salmonella spp.
- Dogs are screened for the following parasite species via Parasite PCR Panel: Ancylostoma spp., Uncinaria stenocephala, Toxacara/Toxascaris spp. (T. canis, T. catis, T. leonina), Baylisascaris procyonis, Trichuris vulpis, Giardia duodenalis (subtypes A/B), Cryptosporidium spp. (C. canis, C. felis), Cystosisopora spp., Eimeria spp., Diplylidium caninum, Echinococcus spp (E. multiocularis, E. granulosus), Taenia spp, and Neospora caninum.
