From Last Resort to New Beginnings: Mistletoe's Fecal Transplant Success Story
Name: Mistletoe
Age: 7 months
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Condition: Chronic diarrhea
"I used the enema on Wednesday. Mistletoe is a 7 month old female DSH who came from a hoarding situation. She has had chronic diarrhea. Her fecal pcr was positive for campylobacter, clostridium with high levels of alpha toxin, cryptosporidium and feline enteric coronavirus. For the past month and a half we have had her, we have tried Tylosin, Fortiflora, Clavamox, GI diet, and Benefiber with no response.
She had her first solid stool on Saturday!!
The fecal transfer was my last ditch effort to make her adoptable and it saved her life!
I will definitely be using her his protocol more in the future.“
- Dr. Taylor Smith, DVM, Foothills Animal Shelter
Update: Mistletoe is doing great and was adopted! 🎉

Research Spotlight
AnimalBiome Veterinary is excited to announce our latest peer-reviewed publication:
Microbiome Responses to Oral Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) in a Cohort of Domestic Dogs
In this study using our oral FMT capsules in 54 dogs with chronic enteropathies, our research team identified positive trends in the gut microbiome of recipient dogs who received oral FMT.
Key findings in this study include:
- Among the dogs in the study, diet and prior antibiotic use were the strongest predictors of microbiome variation.
- Gut Restore (oral FMT) increased the abundances of five beneficial groups of bacteria that produce important short-chain fatty acids.
- Colonization of the gut by the donor bacteria was strongest when there was less overlap in the microbiome profile between the donor and the recipient prior to FMT.
