Penny's Story of Microbiome Transformation From Jamie Christman, LVT
We understand that personal experiences are important in building trust when using a new product. We are happy to share an excerpt of this story from an LVT (licensed vet tech) who was looking for a way to help her own family pet Penny.
“Earlier this year I attended one of your AnimalBiome Veterinary learning webinars and was excited to learn so much valuable information as well as obtain a gift card for attendance. With the gift card I purchased the Canine Gut Microbiome Health Testfor my family dog Penny.
Penny is a 13-year old spayed female Sheltie/Corgi cross and had been experiencing intermittent diarrhea/loose stools since November 2022 when she was treated with a month-long course of Doxycycline for Anaplasmosis infection. She was placed on forti-flora about a week into the antibiotics as her stools started to become a problem.
In the months that followed she would have the occasional day of formed solid stools but more days than not her stools ranged from semi-formed to very loose. She was on Fortiflora for a number of months to follow, interspersed at times with Proviable, as well as adding in some yogurt or kefir daily. Nothing seemed to give any reliable/consistent improvement.
After taking your webinar and then obtaining the Gut Microbiome Health Test for her in the beginning of July we finally had some tangible answers and possible solutions!...
Penny had dysbiosis (not surprising) with the major culprit being an overgrowth of C. difficile. We ordered the GI Relief capsules from AnimalBiome Veterinary (which would actually address her C. difficile issue!) I was extremely pleased (though not in the least surprised) to see improvement in Penny's stool quality after only 3 doses of GI Relief! She took it daily for 2 weeks, every other day for 1 week and then we discontinued them. She has not relapsed in any way (if she had we were considering the FMT capsules) but it's been amazing to witness first-hand the benefits of microbiome testing and the outcome that can be achieved when the underlying issue is actually discovered and addressed! Best regards and thank you again so very much!”

Robin Saar, RVT, VTS in Nutrition
Robin’s Report
We are so excited to share the release of the first veterinary textbook “Small Animal Microbiomes and Nutrition”. Robin is the main author on this book with our Dr. Holly Ganz contributed chapters 6 and 7. This Wiley Blackwell published book includes chapters on terminology, development, influencing factors, testing, and focus in multiple organ systems and axis descriptions.
This 25 chapter book also has chapters on communication, creating nutrition plans, and completing nutrition calculations along with a bonus chapter on-line that holds templates for you to use in practice. Want to use this as a training tool for your team? The online version has quizzes for each chapter. This first edition and one-of-a-kind textbook can be purchased through Wiley directly, or on Amazon (available in North America and the UK).
As a tech Robin is always looking for ways to support teams that are preparing samples for testing. Check out these quick “How To Videos” and share as part of your next practice meeting.
Research Spotlights
Microbiome Responses to Fecal Microbiota Transplantation in Cats with Chronic Digestive Issues
In our recently published study, we focused on FMT therapy in felines with chronic enteropathy, showcasing the positive impact of microbiome medicine when dealing with patients with chronic conditions.

Case Report: Oral and fecal microbiota in a super-donor: the healthy microbiota paradigm for fecal transplantation
In preparation for our November webinar, we are happy to share some new research in oral health.
Analyzing both oral and fecal microbiomes in a super-donor, researchers showed an important link in the gut-oral axis: higher oral diversity is crucial to fecal diversity. Increased diversity increases the effectiveness of fecal material transplants and the beneficial alterations to patient health.
